School Boards

 

A school board is a body that operates the province's publicly funded schools. The school board is governed by its publicly elected board members (the board of trustees). Collectively, boards of trustees set the vision for the school board, develop policies, allocate resources and set the goals that lay the foundation and drive programs and operations in the school board. 

Trustees can be elected to one of four different school board systems:

  • English Public
  • English Catholic
  • French Public
  • French Catholic.

In the 2022 Markham Municipal Election, voters will be casting their ballot for a trustee in 1 of the following school boards:

  • York Region District School Board (English Public)
  • York Catholic District School Board (English Catholic)
  • Conseil scolaire Viamonde (French Public)
  • Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir (French Catholic)

 

York Region District School Board Trustee (English Public) (EP)

  • Anyone can vote for this school board
  • If your children are in French Immersion in the Public system, you support this school board. 

York Catholic District School Board Trustee (English Catholic) (ES)

  • You personally need to be Roman Catholic to vote for this school board, regardless of if your partner is Roman Catholic or if your children attend an English Catholic school
  • If your children are in French Immersion in the Catholic system and you meet the qualifications above, you support this school board

Conseil scolaire Viamonde Trustee (French Public) (FP)

Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir Trustee (French Catholic) (FS)

  • You personally need to be Roman Catholic and have French Language Education Rights to vote for this school board, regardless if your partner is Roman Catholic or if your children attend a French Catholic school
  • This does not include French Immersion or French as a second language.


A voter with non-resident eligibility will not vote for a school board office in the 2022 Markham Municipal Election, but will vote for a school board office in the municipality they live in.
